All Ireland Institute for Hospice and Palliative Care

Funded PhD Studentship (University College Dublin and University of Ulster)

A vacancy has arisen for a funded Ph.D. Studentship to identify the differential pathways and experiences of individuals with mental illness into and through palliative care and hospice services on the island of Ireland. This study, which is jointly funded by All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC) and the Heath Research Board, will achieve its aims by examining how decisions are made in identifying and referring individuals with an existing diagnosed mental illness and co-existing palliative care needs to palliative care and/or hospice services; examining the experiences of those referred to and who engage with palliative care and hospice services and exploring the experiences of those who provide palliative and hospice care to this group of service users. The intended outcomes of this research are identifying how the needs of people with a diagnosed mental illness can be better recognised and more appropriately addressed within palliative care setting in the future.
