Forum 2019, 6th National Conference of the Forum on End of Life in Ireland

In 2009, the Irish Hospice Foundation launched the Forum on End-of-Life in Ireland. This started with a year-long listening exercise aimed at gathering people’s views and opening dialogue on a very broad range of issues, through public meetings, workshops, presentations and invitations for submissions. This ‘national conversation’ on dying, death and bereavement involved:

  • Over 167 written submissions from individuals and organisations
  • 23 workshops, at which 108 presentations were delivered
  • Public meetings in nine locations countrywide – Dublin (2), Galway, Cork, Limerick, Sligo, Tullamore, Waterford and Dundalk.

What emerged was a picture of the issues that are of most concern to Irish people in relation to end of life:Communication:

  • Autonomy and dignity
  • End-of-life care
  • Spiritual and psychological care
  • Support for carers
  • Administrative issues
  • Respectful care after death
